Exclusive | Nia Keturah Talks Music And More
A few weeks ago we introduced you to DC native, fast rising new comer Nia Keturah. Featured as the Guadian's New Band Of The Day and likened to Kendrick Lamar. Her flow is woozy yet catchy, it's kinda like spoken word rap. Keturah makes her UK debut on the airwaves next week. Check her out on Amazing Radio.
Nia Talks Music & More
You have been compared to the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Eryka Badu, Lauryn Hill but where do u get ur inspiration? Those are all three lofty comparisons that I feel honored to have garnered. I draw a lot of inspiration from Kendrick Lamar. his particular brand of rap is one I no doubt subscribe to. Section 80 blew me away when I first heard it. Lauryn Hill reminds me of the Common lyric from his classical song "I used to love H.E.R." ..."she was teaching me but wasn't preaching to me, in a method that was leisurely" Lauryn's miseducation was in a very real way my reeducation. It would be a lie to say I didn't draw from her. And then there's Ms.Badu...I remember not being allow to sing "Tyrone" because it was "too grown" of a song...but I would sing it when my parents weren't around. Erykah is like a mother Pisces to me, I feel like we're two fish in the same stream...so creatively I feel a kinship with her.
I dig that people can hear bits of them in me because I admire them so much.Countless other people feed into Nia Keturah, but those three are my benchmarks of greatness.Who is your favourite artist | What's your best album | What you listening to at the moment? There's something about Frank Ocean and Adele that I could never tire of…there's a purity about bearing your heart that I adore. Adele's 19 and Frank's Nostalgia Ultra speak to my soul like no other sounds.
I really enjoy the discovery of new movements. I lived in Atlanta for a while and have since kept tabs on that scene. So I'm really liking what I'm hearing come out of the A recently…word to Rome Fortune, Two 9, Brandon Rossi, The Greedmont Park Gang, and Miloh Smith. What do you do to unwind?I lay on my back and throw a bouncy ball into the air. It's like playing catch with God. I get a lot of peace watching that sphere swirl out of my hands and into his gravity. It's like the world becomes less complex...you throw something out and receive it in return. An exercise of Karma. What has been the greatest moment of your musical career so far?The experience of creating and releasing my song Control. It was agonizing to write, literally it pained me. Suicidal thoughts that I had kept bottled in for so long burned as they became spoken words. When I decided to release it, I assumed most people would dismiss it as a misguided soul's petty confession. Instead there was this tremendous out pouring of love. It became my first major single.Spread Light,Nia
