WeAreSoFresh 2014 Album Of The Year: J. Cole '2014 Forest Hill Drive' Review | 2014 Recap

2013 had set the bar real high for hip hop music so at the beginning of the year I was excited for another year of good music. Kid Ink, Isaiah Rashad and Ty Dollar Sign got us to a good start especially that Cilvia Demo (still bumping that a year later). I actually thought T.D.E would claim the year especially after their BET cypher in 2013. Rashad passed the baton to ScHoolboy Q Oxymoron, a good album but didn't really have a lasting impression and you had to be in the right mood to listen to it. Q passed on to Ab-Soul who came with These Days. Another good album but it wasn't really anything special if you know what I'm saying. Rick Ross dropped one of the most anticipated albums Mastermind. The boss really brought the heat on this. YG came through with My Krazy Life, Future with Honest, Bas with Last Winter and PND dropped the sequel to his debut PartyNextDoor. All these albums were good and deserved a mention but didn't really leave lasting impression, I call it The Bubble Gum Effect. That's my opinion though and you might think differently but I don't really care what you think lol. We saw Common team back with No ID and the result was amazing. The Roots tried another concept album ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin but I personally didn't get it, maybe give it another go some time this year. The big homie 50Cent returned from a long break with Animal Ambition and G-Unit reunited. A much needed album, dude did not disappoint. Things really picked up in September when Jeezy dropped Seen It All: the Biography, that's about the time me and the homies started discussing Album uOf The Year. Come October the competition was tight as we saw T.I, Logic, Stalley battle for the title. Rozay tried his hand once more but it wasn't quite a Mastermind. Tried that Pink Print from Nicki after I heard good things but it was ight. Definitely better than the last. The killer for me came with Cole. That 2014 Forest Hill Drive is something else. I felt that in my soul. Cole's third studio album connects with the listener on a personal level like on the Wet Dreamz, most guys can relate to that. The album was mainly produced by Cole himself, along with others and it pays attention to Cole's pursuit for happiness and self contentment. The album title is the house where Cole grew up. 2014 Forest Hill Drive urges the listener to value the simple things in life which we often overlook- family, friendship and love. I personally struggle with stand out tracks coz the whole project was on point. If I really had to pick I'd say Love Yourz - No body's life is better than yours (In the context of the album, this song follows Cole’s self-reflection as he begins to realise that the money and fame didn’t bring him the happiness he desired. To gain the true happiness he was yearning for he needed to appreciate himself more and those that love him.)

There were other albums that came out after Cole but honestly i ant had time away from Forest Hill Drive. Guess ill check out the other joints when I'm done. This album deserves to be album of the year and its evident through out the whole project. I hope we have an amazing year for music in 2015 and thank you for your continued support in previous years.
